Pero López de Ayala y la lectura de la Historia

Este trabajo trata de ofrecer nuevos argumentos y perspectivas sobre el significado de la lectura de la historia en la época de Pero López de Ayala y sobre la posición del cronista en tal contexto. Se ha señalado a menudo que la historiografía tuvo en Castilla un papel similar al desempeñado por la narrativa de ficción en otras cortes europeas. A partir de esta idea se expone la evolución en la recepción cortesana que experimentó la escritura histórica y se intenta mostrar hasta qué punto Ayala tuvo un protagonismo decisivo en el desarrollo de la historiografía como forma narrativa dotada de autoridad y prestigio cultural. En particular, la versión castellana de las Décadas de Tito Livio acabó por consolidar esa dimensión de la historia y favoreció su implantación como modelo de cultura.

This work tries to provide a set of new arguments and points of view on the meaning of the act of reading history in the days of Pero López de Ayala, and on the chronicler status in such context. It has been pointed out often that historiography had in Castile a role similar to the one played by the fictional narrative at other European courts. Taking a start from this assumption, this article exposes the evolution in the courtly reception offered to historical writing, and tries to show Ayala’s decisive role in the development of historiography as a narrative form imbued of authority and cultural prestige. In particular, the Castilian version of Titus Livius’ Decades achieved the consolidation of that dimension of history, and favoured its implantation as cultural model.
