This paper presents some of the serious problems that the business of private prisons has generated in the U.S. After briefly outlining the main reasons that led to the current development of this reality, and the points in favor and against privatization, the paper analyses the impact that this initiative could have on the operation of the U.S. correctional system. The experience in some states like Oklahoma, New Mexico, Mississippi and California reveals how influence peddling among politicians, representatives of large companies that control the market and powerful investment banks has contributed to an increase in the prison population and the ensuring of this business's profits with taxpayer´s money. The conclusion is that such experiences represent an "anti-model", a telling example of the path that a civilized prison policy should never take.
