San Agustín en los escritos de Lutero

Si bien es innegable que san Agustín tuvo una cierta influencia sobre Lutero, los historiadores opinan de desigual manera respecto de su profundidad. Es cierto que Lutero leyó algunas obras de san Agustín, especialmente durante el tiempo que enseñó como profesor en la Universidad de Wittenberg hasta el año 1520, más o menos. Estudios históricos muestran que esa influencia fue muy diversa según las varias etapas de su vida. Después de esa fecha, Lutero le cita selectiva, muy raramente y fuera de contexto, aunque mantiene un gran aprecio por su persona. En este artículo se examina gran parte de los escritos de Lutero, y se opina que éste leyó muy pocas obras de san Agustín y otras conclusiones lógicas que se establecen al final del mismo.

That Augustine was some influence on Martin Luther is undeniable. However different historians vary in opinion as how great this influence was. It is certain, therefore, that Luther had read some of Augustine’s writings, but when his only work as a professor at the University of Wittenberg before October 1518, and further historical research remains to be on Augustibe’s influence on Luther at various stages of the latter’s life. After 1520 (circiter) that date he used him selectively and he cited very rarely and out of context, but he continued to praise Augustine.
