This article is about power of governance in Lumen Gentium, the Dogmatic Constitution of Vatican Council II. Before studying what the Council document says, I look at the notion of power in general as a basic backdrop to understanding power of governance, and what Lumen Gentium says about it: notion, division, Christological basis, finality. To see to what extent the Council Fathers included the richness of power of governance in the Council text, I considered it essential to offer a synthesis of the legislative, judicial and executive character of power of governance. The conclusion of this research is that Lumen Gentium, number 27, concentrates almost completely on the basic teaching of the Church on the power of governance, emphasizing the role of a bishop as a vicar of Christ, who received the power of governance through the channel of the sacraments; it establishes the relationship between the episcopal and the pontifical authority; it fosters a paternal spirit of service when implementing the ministry.
