Valoración del bienestar animal en caballos: introducción al protocolo AWIN
En el presente trabajo se analiza el Protocolo de Bienestar Animal de aplicación a los caballos, diseñado en el marco del proyecto de investigación denominado Animal Welfare Indicators (AWIN) financiado por la Comisión Europea a través del 7º Programa Marco de Investigación e Innovación. Partiendo de una referencia al censo de caballos en España y en el mundo y de las diferentes aptitudes de los mismos, pero poniendo especial énfasis en la actividad deportiva y con una referencia a la aportación del sector equino a la economía, se analiza el bienestar del caballo mediante el citado modelo AWIN. Después se analiza más en detalle la estructura del Protocolo y se revisan los estudios que se han llevado a cabo en su aplicación, poniendo de manifiesto las diferencias de opinión respecto a los problemas encontradas por los distintos autores que los han realizado. Se finaliza aludiendo a la necesidad de ajustarlo a las diferentes circunstancias a fin de conseguir una adecuada fiabilidad y repetibilidad de sus resultados.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the animal welfare Protocol for horses, designed within the framework of the research project, called Animal Welfare Indicators (AWIN) funded under the 7th Framework Program for Research and Innovation by the European Commission. After a brief description of the census of horses in Spain and in the world, and of the different skills and uses of horses in general, with special emphasis on sports and competition activities, including the contribution to the economy of the equine sector,, the work analyzes the horses´ welfare using the said AWIN model. The work continues with a more in depth analysis of the structure of the Protocol and describes the studies already conducted testing its implementation, highlighting the differences of opinion about the problems found by their authors. It concludes by referring to the need to adjust it to different circumstances in order to achieve adequate reliability and repeatability of its outcomes.
