La crisis de los 40

Las constituciones más longevas son aquellas que tienen la flexibilidad suficiente para adaptarse a los cambios políticos y sociales y evolucionar con su tiempo. En ese sentido, sacralizar la Constitución es tanto como convertirla en cristal: es hacerla rígida y frágil. Por el momento, haremos bien en celebrar el cumpleaños del texto que inauguró el tiempo más próspero de la historia de España. Hoy, nuestra norma fundamental atraviesa su particular crisis de la mediana edad: enseña algunas arrugas y una barriguita incipiente, clarea la coronilla, luce plateado el pelo sobre las sienes, cuenta estrías, experimenta la gravedad newtoniana y esa dichosa celulitis. Algunos dirán: “Que nos quiten lo bailado”, y otros opinarán que es hora de retirarse. Yo, en cambio, les digo: cálcense las botas, que toca seguir bailando.

For the time being, we would do well to celebrate the anniversary of the text that began the most prosperous period in Spain's history. Today, our Constitution is going through its own midlife crisis: it has a few wrinkles and its belly is beginning to sag, the top of its head is shiny, its hair is silvery around the temples, it has stretch marks, itis suffering from Newton's law gravity and cellulite. Some people will say: "it was worth every minute," and others will think it's time to retire. But I say “let's not stop now, we're just getting started.”
