Sextortion. A crime of corruption and sexual exploitation
The International Bar Association (IBA)’s preliminary research in eight jurisdictions highlights the barriers to addressing sextortion within existing legal frameworks. The findings from that research underscore the extent to which anti-corruption laws have not focused on sexual favours, and laws dealing with sexual offences have not focused on the possibility of a corruption component to the offence. The result has been an imprecise fit and a patchwork of potentially applicable laws that might reach some, but not all sextortion conduct, leaving gaps that contribute to impunity.
