Las cifras relativas al turismo impactan. En 2015 las 100 ciudades con más turismo recibieron 540 millones de visitantes internacionales frente a los 450 de 2012. No es un fenómeno pasajero ni tiene trazas de estancarse, al contrario. Las consecuencias más visibles de tal éxito se revelan en los distintos lugares y ámbitos donde el turismo intensivo colmata y congestiona los espacios públicos, modifica y desplaza los usos preexistentes, distorsiona precios, modifica la convivencia y origina e impone cargas inmateriales a quienes como residentes o usuarios normales de la ciudad no participan directamente en el negocio turístico. En ellos, y por ahora, el efecto llamada supera la capacidad de respuesta urbana de la ciudad y, en un ámbito mayor, su capacidad de acogida. Pero no es cuestión de quedarse quietos a la espera de que el problema se ajuste por sí solo, ni hace falta profundizar mucho en el campo de la teoría. Limitando el análisis al efecto urbano directo de la actividad turística y en particular, al del nuevo modelo de alojamiento, hay amplio margen para políticas activas.
Tourism figures have grown and show a significant impact on urban space. In 2015, the 100 cities with most tourism had 540 million international visitors compared to 450 million in 2012. This is not a one time phenomena nor does it appear that it will stand still, quite the opposite. The effects of such successful growth can be witnessed in both spaces and areas where intense tourism clogs and congests public spaces shifts and alters pre existent uses, distorts local prices, urban collective behavior and lastly, creates and imposes intangible burdens on inhabitants and local residents that naturally do not participate in tourism. In them, at least for the time being, the effects of this intense tourism go beyond the city’s ability to adequately respond and, on a bigger scale, the city’s ability to accommodate so many visitors. However, this does not mean one remains idle and waits for the problem to fix itself, nor does it require deeper theoretical examination. If we were to limit our analysis strictly to the direct impact this tourism brings to urban space, focussing specifically on the new touristic lodging economy, there is more than enough room to proactively put in place policies.
