The involvement of investment funds in the world of sport, and in economic operations with professional football players in particular, emerged in South America in the 1990s, and sparked a great deal of controversy, giving rise to a blanket ban by FIFA in 2015. The confusing wording of the prohibitive regulations and the excessively general nature of the ban led to interesting doctrinal debates, an increasing widespread praxis aimed at overcoming the regulatory limitations, and finally, an amendment of the regulations in 2019, which tempers and reinterprets the terms of the restrictions.
